Divine Appointment or Coincidence?

Posted by on

Tonight as I sit down to write this I ponder the title. Whether you are a believer or not, one saying that I am sure you have heard and maybe even used is "everything happens for a reason". Am I right? So maybe there is a chance that you have not used that saying but hang in there with me ....See, I believe in this what Romans 8:28 says: “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Tonight while my family and I were at our local T.J. Maxx store trying to find our daughter some clothes for school, I ran into a friend of mine. A friend that is often positive and encouraging and brings joy to me every time that we chat. Tonight was no exception, he was encouraging me to push through my unhealthy eating habits and unwillingness to get up early to exercise when another gentleman stepped in and thought that he overheard us talking about a particular car accident over a year and a half ago. After I responded that we were actually just talking about exercising, the gentleman apologized and walked away. I finished my conversation and began to wander, quite the normal for me when I go into a store of any type.

As I began to flip through the t shirt rack I felt this tug to go talk to this guy who mis-heard what we were talking about. Almost as if something was telling me that this guy is struggling and just needed someone to talk to. I walk over, apologize for interrupting his shopping and asked him if indeed he was asking about an auto accident and his response was this "Man, I am so sorry for interrupting. I feel so bad. My son died in a car accident a little over a year and a half ago and I thought I heard you guys talking about it". I proceeded to inquire about the accident and asked who his son was... Could you believe that it was this huge hearted little boy that welcomed my daughter into his life with open arms, and a little tap on the butt her first year at this school!! I told this guy that I didn't know his son personally but I have heard many great stories about how caring he was, how he knew no stranger and how he always seeked out "the one" that just needs a friend. I offered my condolences for his loss and said that there was no way that I could even begin to imagine the pain he has experienced through this loss, but if he was interested I would love to pray for him, right there, in T.J. Maxx.

Now, I couldn't tell ya what exactly I said while praying but I do know this. He gave me a hug and thanked me for approaching him and said that is just what he needed. I said, ya know ... I am not a "bold" person, but something bigger than myself was urging me to come over here. If it was just to give him someone to talk to, if it was just to offer a hug and a prayer I still know one thing. Things happen for a reason, that is without a doubt the truest thing I could grasp in this moment ..

"And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose."
